Northwestern Pennsylvania

Erie, Pennsylvania

City and Erie County seat

Pennsylvania's Lake Erie city

Erie is the largest city in northwestern Pennsylvania and the seat of Erie County, set on Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie about 120 miles north of Pittsburgh. Its bayfront, Presque Isle State Park, a compact downtown and a growing medical and manufacturing base give it a character closer to the Great Lakes than to the rest of the state.

History & Local Character

Laid out in 1795 after the Battle of Lake Erie, the city grew as a port, shipbuilding center and railroad town. Heavy industry and lake shipping defined the 20th century, and the bayfront has since been redeveloped for recreation.

Housing & Real Estate

Erie offers Victorian homes in the West Bayfront and Frontier neighborhoods, rowhouses near downtown and suburban housing in Millcreek and Harborcreek. Prices are among the lowest of any Pennsylvania city on the lake.

Restaurants & Shopping

Downtown's State Street and the West Eighth Street corridor host a growing restaurant scene, with lake perch, pierogies and Italian kitchens as local staples.

Schools & Education

Erie's public schools are operated by the Erie School District, and Gannon University, Mercyhurst University and Penn State Behrend are all in the area.

Parks & Recreation

Presque Isle State Park offers miles of beaches and trails, and the Bayfront Connector, Frontier Park and Asbury Woods add more green space.

Transportation & Accessibility

I-79, I-90 and Route 20 serve Erie, and the Erie International Airport offers regional flights. Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited stops at Union Station.

Local Businesses

Independent restaurants, shops and professional offices line State Street, with manufacturing along the bayfront and in suburban industrial parks.
